Fast Response to Kates Request!!!

The people at Wellington Zoo are AMAZING!!!!

Hi Kate,

Thank you for your email and interest in Wellington Zoo.

You have an interesting topic to research and I’m sure you will find plenty of information from a good number of sources.

You may find some good information on this website: http://www.kangaroofootprints.com.au/about-joeys.htm

At Wellington Zoo we help students learn about various subjects when they visit the Zoo with their school class. Regrettably we do not have enough resources to be able to respond to the large number of student queries we receive.

Our suggestion is that you use a combination of resources including but not limited to our own website (a link to our animal collection is recorded below), the Department of Conservation, Ministry for the Environment, WWF, Greenpeace and a good structured search on Google to gather your data.

For information on most species at the zoo see our website: http://www.wellingtonzoo.com/content/animals/our-collection.aspx?t=1

If your school has plans for a camp or field trip then please consider booking an LEOTC Learning Session here at Wellington Zoo as this is a great way to learn how the Zoo is working with conservation initiatives, animal populations and the environment.

Thanks again for your interest in Wellington Zoo and we wish you well with your topic of interest.

Kind regards

Rhiannon

Great ideas for Kate to continue her learning with.

Kate is on the hunt for info about Kangaroos!

Today for reading, Kate emailed Wellington Zoo to see if they could help her find answers to her questions.

Kate did a fantastic job with her email.

Here it is.....

To the Zoo Keepers

My name is Kate and I am 7.  I go to Oroua Downs School and I am doing a project on Kangaroos.
Will you please help me answer these questions.
  1. How long does it take for a young kangaroo to learn to bounce?
  2. When the young kangaroo gets out of the pouch, how big is it?
Thank you for your time and I am looking forward to the answers.

From Kate

We are looking forward to getting a reply!

Great learning Kate

Another Awesome Poem!!!!

Well done to Recko

He worked really hard and decided to change the format of his poem, he thought repeating lines would add impact to his ideas.

Great thinking Recko!  A super poem!!!!

WALT: Use similes to describe colours.....

simile
ˈsɪmɪli/
noun
plural noun: similes
  1. 1.
a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g. as brave as a lion ).

We used art as motivation for our writing, we discussed what similes were for and how to use them.
Here are some of the examples of our creative poetry using similes......

Day two of photography

Today our focus was people!

Here are some shots that our super photographers took.

Reading and Learning about Orphan elephants!

The stripes reading group have been investigating the plight of Orphan Elephants in Kenya.  We discovered this story and then also this video to help us make more connections and increase our comprehension.
An interesting watch...

Here are some things that this group learnt.

Riki-Lee - I found out that the orphan elephants need to be feed by the keepers every three hours for two years!  The keepers teach the babies how to survive in the wild when they are about three years old.

Aimee - Some elephants can be born blind.  Elephants at the orphanage like to play soccer.  You breathe in an elephants trunk and they will remember you forever.

Makayla - The keepers put mud on the elephants to protect them from getting sunburnt.  The keeper feed the orphans morning and night, every three hours.

Preston - The orphans mothers get killed by poachers for their tusks.  If a baby elephant sees this, it will never forget it and this can make them very scared for a long time.

Recko - A female elephant can bury the orphaned elephants if they are weak, even if they are alive.  The keepers sleep with the orphans, in the same room, otherwise the elephants get upset and make loud noises.

Jack - I never knew that baby elephants like to play soccer.  I never knew that the people breath into their trunks to help them remember them.  I never knew that the keepers slept with the baby elephants.

Well done everyone!  You have worked hard and learnt a lot, some of this was pretty tricky stuff!
Be proud of yourselves.

Handy Tips

If your budding photographer wishes to extend their knowledge...... check this link out :-)

First photography session!!!

We are focussing on photography this week.
Today we discussed perspective, we looked at lots of examples by photographers, had a lesson via the ipad and screen and then we took off outside to let our creativity explode!
It was a little trickier that we thought, we really needed to make sure that we focussed on the brief and not just on the subjects we wanted.
Today, we were aiming to show perspective by taking pictures from a low angle or even on the ground, here are a few snaps from our arvo.

Week ten learning fun!!!

Welcome to week 10!!!!!
Hello to all our wonderful parents

Please, please, if you are able, could you go onto our blog and leave a comment about one of our posts, we check daily.  Your time and contributions are greatly appreciated.

A huge congratulations to everyone in our awesome class with their efforts in our basic facts race!!! You are all doing a superb job and thanks for the support at home too.

This week we are looking at reflecting on our learning and the learning of others.  I have been impressed with the quality advice the children are giving each other.

We are going to be focussing on photography and descriptive writing!  We are working on this in class, if there is a chance that the children are able to use a family camera to practice with different scenery (home), that would be fab!
You could email copies of their photos at the following address.

Cannot believe it is nearly the end of the term.  Your children are delightful and I have enjoyed working with them!

Looking forward to sharing our learning next week at the learning celebration!

Celebrating our awesomeness!

It was so incredibly hot, and we are so incredibly awesome that we decided to take a crazy awesome class photo.

What a pity D'Vontae wasn't here to join in the madness!

Disgusting food

Today, we wrote about a food that we really don't like.
We tried to use adjectives to help us describe why the food was disliked and then thought about how we could get rid of it.
Not too bad for our first attempt, we are going to continue to work on this tomorrow.
Here are some examples :-)

I hate cucumbers because it is a slimy greeny and I hate my greens.  They taste like honey.  I hate, hate my greenies.  I hide my food in my shoe and sometimes I hide it in my pocket.    By Jade

Museli bars are disgusting because they nearly make me spew.  They don't agree with my mouth!  By Benjamin.

When I have to eat the squishy peas they look like little rotten apples.  I think it might taste like a greeny slimy slug.  If I had to hide peas, I would tell Todd to look the over there and then I would drop the peas into his plate.  They would make a farty sound when it went on his plate, then they would be as flat as a rainbow mat.  By Kate

When I tasted that brussel sprout, it tasted like smelly socks covered in snot!  It looks greeny.  It was slimy, very slimy.  I hid the brussel sprout under my bed.   By Sophia

Art Intensive Number Two

What another amazing day of art we had last week!
This time we were working with needles and thread and created fantastic stitchery artworks.

We planned out our ideas, practised our knot tying, showed great patience and determination to complete our artworks.

A huge thanks to Reckos Mum, Benjamins Ma, Jades Nana, Charlottes Mum for spending the day with us, it was so lovely sharing your time and skills with us.  I am sure you were all as impressed as I was with the efforts of the children!

Our artworks are in the corridor for you to see.
